Palindromes in crosswords and word games
A palindrome reads the same forward and backward. That symmetry makes it useful in word games, but it also trains a habit that helps with ordinary crossword patterns.
§ 1
Symmetry gives you free information
If an answer is a palindrome, the first and last letters match, the second and next-to-last letters match, and the center controls the shape. That is a lot of structure before you even solve the clue.
Even when the answer is not a palindrome, thinking symmetrically can help you notice repeated letters and mirrored patterns faster.
§ 2
Use palindromes as pattern practice
Short palindromes are good practice because they make letter positions obvious. They teach you to care about where a letter sits, not only whether it appears somewhere in the word.
That same skill is exactly what makes pattern search effective in real crossword solving.
