Crossword solver
Crossword Path is built to make English crossword solving faster and less frustrating. If you know a few letters, the answer length, or even just part of the clue logic, you can use the search modes here to narrow the answer quickly instead of guessing blindly.
Use pattern search when you know letter positions
Pattern search is the strongest crossword-solver mode when you already have a few reliable crossings. If you know the answer is five letters and starts with S and ends with E, you can search that exact shape instead of scrolling through random word lists.
This is usually the fastest way to move a crossword forward because it respects both answer length and position. It turns a vague clue into a shortlist of realistic candidates, which is exactly what you want in the middle of a solve.
Use contains search when your information is weaker
Sometimes you know which letters appear somewhere in the answer, but you do not yet trust their positions. That is where contains search helps. It is looser than pattern search, but it can still surface the right vocabulary when the grid is only partly filled.
In practice, many crossword solves bounce between these two modes. Contains search helps you explore; pattern search helps you confirm.
A good crossword solver is also a ranking tool
Matching letters is only half the job. The other half is showing normal, useful words ahead of obscure dictionary edge cases. That is why ranking matters so much. A solver can technically work while still feeling bad if strange words dominate the top of the results.
The long-term goal here is not just to find valid words, but to surface the answers that feel most natural in real crossword use. Curated clues, safer promotions, and frequency signals all help with that.
Daily practice makes the solver better too
The daily crossword is part of the same ecosystem. The more often you solve compact grids, the more useful the search modes become because you start recognizing common clue shapes, short connector words, and familiar answer patterns.
So if you want to improve, use the search modes when you stall and use the daily crossword as regular practice. Those two things reinforce each other.
