Place names in crosswords
Place names are common crossword answers because they have clear clue categories and distinctive letter patterns. Once you know the answer is geographical, the search space gets much smaller.
§ 1
Read the geography signal
Clues mentioning a city, island, river, capital, region, or country are usually asking you to think geographically. The answer length then tells you whether you are looking for a short country code-style answer, a city, or a longer region.
This is where crossings are especially powerful. One reliable starting or ending letter can separate several similar place names quickly.
§ 2
Watch for old and alternate forms
Some crosswords use older, shortened, or alternate place names. If the modern name almost fits, check whether a common variant fits the pattern better.
Do not force obscure geography too early. A fair crossword will usually give enough crossings or a clear clue category before expecting a less familiar place.
