Word origin

From Latin anthrōpophagī, the plural of anthrōpophagus, from Ancient Greek ἀνθρωποφάγος (anthrōpophágos, “man-eating”). First attested in 1581, as an ethnonym. Use of the singular anthropophagus is rare.
