Word origin

From Spanish maravedí, from Arabic مُرَابِطِين (murābiṭīn), an inflected plural of مُرَابِط (murābiṭ, “holy man”), the name of the Almoravid rulers of Muslim Spain during the 12th century. Compare marabout.
