Borrowed from Dhivehi ރުފިޔާ (rufiyā), ultimately borrowed from Sanskrit रूप्यक (rūpyaka, “a silver coin”), from रूप्य (rūpya, “wrought silver”). Doublet of rupee and rupiah.
