Ten-letter answers can look intimidating, but they also provide many crossings. Once confirmed, a long answer can open an entire section of the grid.

Divide the answer into chunks
Look for familiar beginnings, endings, compounds, and word roots. A ten-letter answer is easier when you stop trying to solve all ten positions at once.
If the puzzle has a theme, long answers may carry more of it than short fill. Let nearby crossings reveal whether a thematic answer is likely.
