Consonant-heavy crossword words
Words with many consonants can look frozen at first. But once one vowel or cluster is confirmed, they often become easier to narrow than softer-looking answers.
§ 1
Find the vowel first
In a consonant-heavy word, the vowel position often carries a lot of information. If you can confirm the vowel through a crossing, the surrounding cluster becomes much easier to reason about.
This is one reason short helper searches are valuable. They let you test a harsh-looking pattern without inventing letters by hand.
§ 2
Think in clusters
Clusters such as STR, SCR, PR, CL, and ST behave like familiar chunks. Recognizing them helps you stop seeing the answer as a random pile of consonants.
Once the cluster is plausible, compare the remaining candidates against the clue category and crossings before committing.
